The Stone by the Sea

Upon a large stone
Sat a woman of old
How long she'd been sitting
Well, that is not known
If hot or if cold
Through the night
And the day
She sat and she stared
Past the beach
And the bay
She stared at the sea
Waiting for, some would say
A long lost love
To return to her side
A promise she'd kept
For many years she has wept
And now she is waiting
Until death will come
Not with malice or fear
But with sad compassion
To reunite the old woman
With the one she holds dear
And take her away
To a place with no sea
Where her lover will stay
And they both can be free.
